Partner-Based Work Visa Under the Accredited Employer Work Visa (AEWV)

New Zealand’s Partner of a Worker Work Visa (AEWV) is designed to allow the spouse or de facto partner of an AEWV holder to live and work in New Zealand during the validity of the principal applicant’s visa. This visa offers an excellent opportunity for partners to join their loved ones and gain employment rights — but the conditions depend on the salary level and occupation of the AEWV holder.

Eligibility Requirements
  • Be the spouse or de facto partner of a current AEWV holder.
  • Provide strong evidence of a genuine and stable relationship — such as marriage certificates, joint financial documents, shared accommodation proofs, and relationship history.
  • Meet health and character requirements set by Immigration New Zealand.
  • Submit a valid partnership support form from the AEWV holder.
Partner’s Salary Level and ANZSCO Code — How It Affects Your Visa
  • If the AEWV Holder Earns at or Above the Median Wage (NZD 29.66/hour):
    • The partner is eligible for an Open Work Visa with no restrictions on employer, job type, or industry.
    • They may work for any employer in any sector.
  • If the AEWV Holder Earns Below the Median Wage and Occupation is ANZSCO Level 1, 2, or 3 (Skilled Roles):
    • The partner may still be eligible for an Open Work Visa if the occupation is on the Green List or considered an essential skill.
    • Certain conditions or sector-specific restrictions may apply.
  • If the AEWV Holder Earns Below the Median Wage and Occupation is ANZSCO Level 4 or 5 (Lower Skilled Roles):
    • The partner is generally not eligible for an Open Work Visa.
    • They may only apply for a Visitor Visa or their own employer-assisted work visa.
Visa Duration and Processing Time
  • The visa is usually granted for the same duration as the AEWV holder’s visa — up to 3 years or as per the principal applicant’s visa expiry.
  • Processing times vary but generally range from 4 to 8 weeks, depending on the completeness of the application and INZ workload.
