A New Era for Skilled Migration
New Zealand has announced two fresh residence pathways under the Skilled Migrant Category — designed to recognise real skills, practical experience, and local contribution. From August 2026, migrants working in skilled, trade, and technical roles will have clearer, faster, and fairer routes to secure permanent residency.
These changes reflect New Zealand’s commitment to attracting and retaining talent, strengthening the workforce, and rewarding those who are already contributing to the country.
The Two New Pathways
1. Skilled Work Experience Pathway
- For professionals in skilled roles (ANZSCO 1–3 levels).
- Requires 5 years of relevant work experience, with at least 2 years in New Zealand.
- Local work must be paid at 1.1 × median wage or higher.
- Designed for those who have proven their skills and built a career in New Zealand.
2. Trades & Technician Pathway
- Tailored for qualified tradespeople and technical workers.
- Requires a Level 4 or higher trade/technical qualification.
- At least 4 years of work experience, including 18 months in New Zealand at or above the median wage.
- A direct route for those who keep New Zealand’s essential industries moving forward.
Key Changes That Benefit You
- Reduced work experience thresholds in several areas, making residency more achievable.
- No higher wage requirement at the time of application — maintaining the median wage suffices.
- Extra recognition for New Zealand qualifications, making study pathways more valuable.
- More certainty and transparency, allowing you to plan your journey to residency with confidence.
Requirements at a Glance
- Skilled role or relevant trade/technical qualification.
- Set years of total experience and New Zealand work.
- Employment paid at or above the median wage.
- Standard health, character, and English language requirements.
Why This is Great News for Migrants
- Clearer & fairer residency routes for professionals, tradespeople, and technicians.
- Recognition of your contribution in New Zealand — your time working here truly counts.
- Greater opportunities for international students, with local qualifications gaining extra weight.
- Alignment with labour market needs, so you can build a secure future while filling in-demand roles.
- Certainty for families — with residency comes stability, long-term planning, and the chance to call New Zealand home.
